How to Keep Data Secure
Data is your most valuable asset, since it can provide insights for making better decisions and can help you develop stronger relationships with your customers and partners. Data can also be a liability when you don’t make the appropriate precautions to protect it.
Companies could lose millions of dollars due to data breaches. They can also damage brand image, diminish trust, and trigger fines from regulatory authorities. While data breaches are inevitable, there are steps you can do to mitigate the risk and safeguard your data from cybercriminals.
1. Authenticate and authorize users to authenticate and authorize.
Data security requires a secure authentication and authorization process to ensure that only authorized people are able to access your data. This can be accomplished by having two or more forms of identification to gain access to your data, for example, something they know (passwords and security tokens) or something they own (electronic devices and other hardware) or even something they’re (biometrics like fingerprints and face recognition).
2. Encrypt everything
Classified data is your most sensitive data and its disclosure without authorization can have the most severe implications for your company and/or the individuals affected. To safeguard classified data, it must be secured at all times and secured by a decryption key which is only accessible to authorized personnel. The classifications should be re-evaluated regularly, and your staff should formulate guidelines for managing encryption keys to ensure they aren’t compromised.
3. Reduce non-essential data access.
Most employees don’t require access to all the information of your company. This lowers the chance of a breach due to the fact that it reduces the number possible entry points for hackers. It is a good idea that users only have access to the information they require to perform their job.
