What Is ESET Online Scanner?
ESET Online Scanning is a tool for free that can be used to detect threats without installing antivirus software. It uses the same scanning technology and signatures as ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus, only through the web browser. It is able to scan a variety of areas including autostart destinations, boot sectors, and the registry. It also tries to fix issues caused by restarts and scans which were previously considered to be infected. It doesn’t, however provide real-time protection.
The interface is simple and user-friendly. The primary screen displays a list with names and descriptions of the detected threats. The user is given the option of deciding to either quarantine or delete the identified threats and also to create a customized scan profile to search specific folders and files. The program can be run offline but you will need an internet connection to download the signatures and then complete the initial update.
The program is able to identify a lot of different malware, such as viruses, Trojans, spyware, adware and other potentially unwanted programs. It can remove rootkits, that are not always removed by other scanners. It can take a while to complete a full scan, and the program can be quite demanding on the CPU. It does not examine encrypted or password-protected files and does not always detect advanced zero-day malware. It is best utilized as a second-opinion scan in conjunction with existing antivirus programs. The first scan is completely free however subsequent scans and solutions to problems require a fee.
